Basic Orientation and Mobility Skills for the Low Vision Patient

About This Course
This course provides basic information and techniques on travel skills for the purpose of assisting an individual with low vision. The course is divided into two modules: the first is Guiding Techniques and the second is Room Familiarization. The Guiding Techniques lecture provides introductory material and is a prerequisite to the second lecture on Room Familiarization. The course presents students with theory as well as practical applications using real-world environments. Videos and 3-D animations demonstrate the various guiding concepts.
Students successfully completing this course will:
- use basic guiding techniques with an individual with low vision
- be able to locate a seat and use proper seating techniques with an individual with low vision
- be able to travel on stairs, curbs, and through doorways with an individual with low vision
- be able to perform basic room familarizaiton using the perimeter and grid techniques with an individual with low vision
- be familiar with the principles of orientation used by individuals with low or no vision
- be able to apply practical application of room familiarization skills to orientation of a dining room

Tuition/Registration

Course Evaluation/Grading
Successful completion of the course requries a score of 70% or better and the completion of the course evaluation. Students will receive a certificate of completion once those two requirements are met.
The course is designed as a self-paced personal enrichment continuing education program. Lectures may be repeated until material is mastered.
